I went on safari in South Africa recently. Yes, it is more amazing than you think it will be. Yes, it is a trip you should try and make once in your life. No, you won't get eaten... well, you probably won't get eaten… unless you’re a buffalo. Here are just a few photos of some of the animals we saw...
I don't think you've covered differences in genitalia and other physical characteristics, or preferences of expression. There are humans who are intersex and who have other non-binary sexual differences. There are other species that have various forms of non-binary sexuality in both physical structures and behaviors. I've read that there even are some that can change their gender under certain circumstances. I wonder what people who engage in rigid religious thinking make of those beings.
I don't think you've covered identity either, an individual's inner sense of self. There is no way to know the inner experience of other species. Or of any other human, either, other than asking and listening. There are humans who say that their personal sense of self, often from very young ages, is not in alignment with their genitalia and/ or with societal norms and expectations. Is their sex defined by their body? Why not by their mind?
Wow I love the photos, it looks as if you had an amazing trip, thank you for sharing you experiences and thoughts with us, I really love you newsletters, many blessings 🦉💜
You always write so clearly & the Nyala sex-change question is perfect. Love the list of down-with-the-kids boring old straight men types - have spotted some of them bloviating in the wilds of twitter. Thank you for sharing the beautiful photos of such beautiful animals.
Love this. X

The mention of 'non binary giraffes' reminded me instantly of this Oliver Reed moment from 'Gladiator':

A safari is on my bucket list. It looks amazing ☺️
Humans know they are mortal that nothing stays the same .
We have the capacity to choose how we react to an event ,with a bit of “magical thinking “
I think God got Adam to name the creatures of the world ,not much up on the bible .
Yet the word name is hugely important if we accept things are mere name ,or think of it in another
way if you look for Brian separate from his name what do you find.?
Does an image appear to your mind that you name Brian.
Enough of the magical thinking .
Some times I think I would like to go to see the animals ,yet I can’t manage the suffering
I hate wildlife programs animals hunting .
A few days ago I was passing a field of lambs and sheep enjoying the sun shine .
They were all gone yesterday I was able to see them in the sun feel great sorrow for the
fate they were facing that is what makes humans different ,I don’t eat meat I mean how could
I feeling as I do.
I have choice .
On the man woman thing .
I just wish men would leave us to our spaces where we can take our kids into a lavatory without
being afraid.
Back in the old days when my kids were small there were only woman in woman’s loos we had
a sense of safety .
Not one of us is can be sure the sun will rise again for us yet we waste our time obsessing
about what we are what does it matter ? .
Live your moments .
I enjoyed your article .
I still have my B Cox doll it has moved with me .
Best wishes to you yours .
Fabulous and amazing photos!
